In the early 2000s I saw a documentary on American Atheists in which a middle aged woman sang "The Atheists' Anthem" on a bus. I liked the words and some years later I discovered it was written by David Mandell. You can hear it sung in a simple form here. I thought: "It needs to be transcribed into proper musical notation and harmonised." This I did and sent a copy of the score to David Mandell for his approval. He approved it and here we are!
Now you may be wondering what the Atheists' Anthem is doing in the hymn list for the "Church" of Infinite Dimensions... Fair question! Well, the Church Of Infinite Dimensions is really a religion for Atheists; It doesn't have a god, there is no heaven or hell and all of science is included in the doctrine. It has a few articles of faith that the true Atheist would not accept: namely that there are Infinite Dimensions and that we experience the totality of our existence in infinite combinations of those infinite dimensions. Atheists and ID followers have a lot in common so there are reasonable grounds for adding the song to this list of hymns, plus I did the harmonisation, so I think that gets it over the line for the moment at least.
You know, sometimes I call myself an Atheist and other times a follower of ID. Since I made up the Doctrine of Infinite Dimensions myself I am under no illusions about divine revelation or the power of faith. I am comfortable in both camps.
Words & Melody: David M. Mandell 2002
Harmonisation: Warren Mars 2009
We are the Atheists, free from mind control.
We have no gods, devils or a soul.
Our lives are happy, as people can see,
Coz we love nature and humanity.
All through the ages ignorance prevails,
Religious leaders preaching fairy tales.
Stop all your raving and your rhetoric,
Your religions make us sick.
Logic and science, good for you and me,
Not a foolish bible or a deity.
Let's have reality, be our goal.
We are the Atheists, free from mind control.
We are the Atheists, free from mind control.
We are the Atheists, free from mind control.
Free from mind control.
The vocal score with chords is provided here.
I have also provided an SATB arrangement for choirs here.
Finally, I have provided a recording of my computer synthesizer playing the SATB arrangement. There is no singing and the synthesizer is very ordinary. Nevertheless the parts are all there and one can sing along with it or use it get an idea of how it should sound with your choir.
